Bowel preparation and other information in english

Bowel cleansing /preparation with Citrafleet or Picoprep

You have been called for a colonoscopy (bowel examination)

In order for this bowel examination to take place, it is important that your bowels are completely clean. For this you need bowel cleansing preparation, CitraFleet or Picoprep. You can buy these in pharmacies, without prescription. For a better result we also recommend you to take 2 tablets of the laxative medication Toilax (also without prescription), each of the two last evenings before the scheduled colonoscopy – especially important if you are regularly constipated.

How to take CitraFleet/Picoprep:

The day before the examination

You can have a small breakfast. Thereafter you must not eat solid food until the colonoscopy is finished. It is important that you drink plenty of clear fluid* to avoid dehydration, at least 3 litres during the day.

* water, cordial, tea and coffee without milk, clear strained soup, broth and fruit juice without pulp

Dose 1: 20:00 o’clock day before examination:

Mix the contents of one sachet into a glass of cold water (approx. 150 ml). Stir for 2 to 3 minutes. If the solution becomes hot, wait until it cools down and then drink the whole glass in one go. The solution will look a little cloudy.

Examination day

Dose 2: 4 to 6 hours before scheduled colonoscopy appointment

Mix the contents of the second sachet into a glass of cold water (approx. 150 ml). Stir for 2 to 3 minutes. If the solution becomes hot, wait until it cools down and then drink the whole glass in one go. The solution will look a little cloudy.

No solid food may be eaten before the examination. However, you must continue to drink – at least 250 ml clear fluid* every hour until scheduled colonoscopy

A bowel examination takes 15-30 minutes, but reckon on approximately 1 hour for the whole procedure. If you are given a sedative you must stay and rest for a hour after the examination.

COLONOSCOPY PROCEDURE DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of a colonoscopy is to look inside your large intestine (colon) for polyps, cancers, ulcers, and other conditions.
The doctor will pass a flexible tube through the anus and examine the colon. The tube has a small camera and a headlight which allow the doctor to see the inside of your colon on a TV monitor. The doctor can take biopsies of abnormal areas, and can also remove polyps. The examination usually takes under half an hour. It may cause some discomfort. Occasionally relaxing medication may be necessary. In case you need this, you can not drive a car the rest of the day and it is recommended that you have someone to follow you home.

Are you taking anticoagulant drugs?

You must notify us in advance if you are taking anticoagulant drugs.

Marevan/warfarin, Xarelto, Pradaxa or Eliquis if possible, should be stoppet two days before the examination. Please contact your "fastlege" if you are unsure if stopping the drug is safe for you.
